    History

The Quebec Ukrainian Archives (QUA) was founded in January 2026 to safeguard the archival heritage of the Ukrainian community in Quebec through the responsible collection and preservation of community records. QUA is committed to preserving and promoting the history, heritage, and contemporary life of the community by providing a centralized physical and digital archive grounded in community stewardship.

    Geographical and cultural context

The QUA is located in a building that previously served as the Patriarch Josyf Slipyj Museum and Archives in Montreal, adjacent to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, placing it within a strong cultural and community setting in Quebec. QUA is designed as a long-term initiative with ongoing logistical and technical support for continued development and maintenance of both physical and digital archival materials of Ukrainian organizations and individuals in Quebec. By adopting and sharing best archival practices with community organizations, QUA improves sustainable heritage stewardship across Quebec’s Ukrainian community.

    Mandates/Sources of authority

    Administrative structure

QUA is a community initiative, affiliated with Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Quebec Provincial Council (UCC-QPC). The project is led and sustained by a diverse team with expertise in cultural leadership, records management, heritage documentation, archiving, media and publishing, digital platforms, financial governance,
and responsible project leadership, working on volunteer basis. This team fulfills the roles of developing donor relations, collection management and digitization, digital systems development and maintenance, and community outreach.

    Records management and collecting policies

QUA identifies, appraises, and acquires physical and digital archival materials from Ukrainian organizations and individuals across Quebec who wish to donate or lend their records, according to mutually signed donor/lender agreements. QUA maintains secure, appropriate storage for physical archival materials and implements appropriate storage, preservation handling, and management procedures. QUA digitizes prioritized physical materials to enhance preservation, accessibility, and long-term usability of the collections. The QUA provides a durable digital infrastructure to manage the archival collections and to publish their
descriptions for community members and researchers through a public interface using Access to Memory (AtoM) platform.
